Intrauterine device (IUD)

How it works

  • Small, copper T-shaped device, inserted into the uterus by a doctor or nurse

  • Non-hormonal

  • Causes sperm to die before reaching an egg

  • Lasts 5-10 years (but can be taken out sooner)

  • Over 99% effective i.e. less than 1 in 100 women with an IUD will get pregnant in a year

  • Works as soon as it is put in

  • Fertility returns immediately after stopping use

  • Periods can be heavier, last longer or be more painful

  • Insertion can be uncomfortable

  • Very small chance of infection in the first 20 days following insertion
