Intrauterine system (IUS)

How it works

  • Small T-shaped plastic device that is inserted into the uterus (womb) by a doctor or nurse

  • Releases the hormone progesterone (stops the body releasing an egg and making other changes needed for pregnancy)

  • Lasts 3-5 years (but can be taken out sooner)

Advantages

  • Over 99% effective i.e. less than 1 in 100 women with an IUS will get pregnant in a year

  • Fertility returns immediately after stopping use

Disadvantages

  • Spotting/irregular periods can be common in the first 6 months

  • Insertion can be uncomfortable
