The implant

How it works

  • Small plastic rod inserted in the inside of the upper arm and releases hormones

  • Releases the hormone progesterone (stops the body releasing an egg and making other changes needed for pregnancy)

  • Lasts 3 years (but can be taken out sooner)

Advantages

  • Over 99% effective i.e. less than 1 in 100 women with the contraceptive implant will get pregnant in a year

  • Fertility and periods return to normal immediately after stopping use

Disadvantages

  • Periods may be longer, irregular or stop altogether

  • It requires a small procedure to insert it
