How it Works

• Made of very thin latex (rubber), polyurethane (plastic) or polyisoprene (synthetic latex)
• Put over the penis when it is erect (hard)
• Prevents sperm entering the vagina

Advantages

• Protects against STIs (the only form of contraception that does this)
• If used correctly is about 98% effective i.e. 2 in 100 women using the contraceptive patch (Note: with typical use its about 82% effective i.e. 18 in 100 get pregnant in a year)
• No serious side effects
• Additional spermicide (kills sperm preventing them from reaching an egg) is not needed

Disadvantages

• Must be used every time you have sex
• Can interrupt sex
• May slip off or break during sex if its the wrong size or not used correctly making it less effective
