How it Works

• An injection of the hormone progesterone (stops the body releasing an egg and making other changes needed for pregnancy) is given
• Usually given into the bum (but can be done in the thigh or tummy) every 12 weeks (3 months) by a doctor, nurse or it can be self-administered

• May reduce heavy/painful periods in some people

Disadvantages

• Can't be removed once injected

• Some people find they gain weight whilst receiving the injection
• It may take some time after stopping the injection for fertility (can take up to 1 year in some) and periods to return normal
