How it Works

• Small plastic rod inserted in the inside of the upper arm and releases hormones
• Releases the hormone progesterone (stops the body releasing an egg and making other changes needed for pregnancy)
• Lasts 3 years (but can be taken out sooner)

Advantages

• Over 99% effective i.e. less than 1 in 100 women with the contraceptive implant will get pregnant in a year
• Fertility and periods return to normal immediately after stopping use

Disadvantages

• Periods may be longer, irregular or stop altogether
• It requires a small procedure to insert it
