How it Works

• Small, copper T-shaped device, inserted into the uterus by a doctor or nurse
• Non-hormonal
• Causes sperm to die before reaching an egg
• Lasts 5-10 years (but can be taken out sooner)

Advantages

• Over 99% effective i.e. less than 1 in 100 women with an IUD will get pregnant in a year
• Works as soon as it is put in
• Fertility returns immediately after stopping use

Disadvantages

• Periods can be heavier, last longer or be more painful
• Insertion can be uncomfortable
• Very small chance of infection in the first 20 days following insertion
