How it Works

• Small T-shaped plastic device that is inserted into the uterus (womb) by a doctor or nurse
• Releases the hormone progesterone (stops the body releasing an egg and making other changes needed for pregnancy)
• Lasts 3-5 years (but can be taken out sooner)

Advantages

• Over 99% effective i.e. less than 1 in 100 women with an IUS will get pregnant in a year
• Fertility returns immediately after stopping use

Disadvantages

• Spotting/irregular periods can be common in the first 6 months
• Insertion can be uncomfortable
